License signing and permissions

Prepare to sign your article license by providing key information

Start by verifying three key details required for license signing:

  • The responsible corresponding author
  • The article’s research funder(s)
  • The affiliation(s) of the responsible corresponding author

If this information was already provided during submission via your journal’s system, it will be fill automatically. Otherwise, you’ll need to input it manually.

These details influence the type of licenses you can sign and determine if article publication charges for open access can be covered by Wiley Open Access Accounts linked to your affiliations or funders. If your affiliation or funder is missing from our database, you can manually add it or indicate if no affiliations or funding were involved. Changes made here won’t affect how your information appears in the published article.

Understand available license types

The license type(s) available to you depend on whether your article is being published as subscription or open access.

*For subscription articles that are U.S. Government works, our standard licenses verify that the articles are in the public domain in the United States.

Can I sign my license electronically?

Yes, most authors can use our quick, easy electronic signing option.

However, some Copyright Owners require additional signatures or authorizations. For example, if you work for an IGO/NGO, an authorized representative of the organization must sign. In these cases, we will provide you the required license(s) to be downloaded, signed, scanned, and uploaded back into Wiley Authors.

While license signing is generally straightforward, it can be more complex for articles with multiple copyright owners. Note that your copyright ownership selections directly affect the copyright line published with your article.

Can I update my copyright ownership selections?

You can update your copyright ownership selections at any point during the workflow in Wiley Authors. However, once the license is signed and uploaded, the workflow will no longer be accessible.

What happens after I upload my signed license?

Once uploaded, your license will be verified by our Copyright and Licensing team. If corrections are needed (e.g., signatures are missing or you uploaded the wrong license), they will contact you directly and reset the license in Wiley Authors to allow updates.

Where can I find my completed license?

After your license has been signed and verified, the completed license will be available on the article page in your Wiley Authors dashboard.

What do I do if I experience issues with the license signing process?

If you encounter any issues during the process, use our live “Help” chat (in the lower-right corner of your screen) for assistance.

How do I get permission to reuse or republish material from a Wiley article or book?
